High Relief Eastern Repoussé

Learn the high relief hammered techniques of chasing and repoussé, used by the ancient Egyptians, Greeks, and Celts, and which is little known in the West – from the Master herself: Victoria Lansford. Participants will create at least 2 pieces suitable for pins or pendants while learning the secrets of achieving exquisite detail and unsurpassed depth and height.
No tool making required! Victoria will provide sets of tools for use during the workshop. She will also provide information on tool making for students interested in making their own tools and stamps, but the majority of class time will be devoted to doing repoussé.
Victoria’s work in this technique has been featured in many books and magazines, including Metalsmith, Jewelry Artist, Nancy Megan Corwin’s Chasing & Repoussé, and as the latest DVD in the series: “Metal Techniques of Bronze Age Masters”.

Enameled Surfaces: A Guided Exploration

Learn the essentials of enameling within the context of an experimental and
non-traditional approach.
Create exciting enameled surfaces through guided explorations of opaque and transparent enamel materials and sifted applications. Techniques covered will include stenciling, dry screening, foil application and embossed foil, basse taille and turbo-champleve; and inlay of enamel shards, seed beads, silver foil “spit balls” and screen.
Essential enameling information will enamel types, properties and application; enamel/metal preparation; kilns/kiln furniture; the importance of test tiles; edge/surface finishing and setting possibilities.
Students will work on their choice of demonstrated techniques to create enameled pieces that can serve as technical reference or for use in future finished pieces.
All levels welcome. Basic metalsmithing/jewelry skills will be helpful.

The Alliance for Young Artists & Writers

The Alliance for Young Artists & Writers identifies teenagers with exceptional artistic and literary talent and brings their remarkable work to a national audience through The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. The Awards have an impressive legacy dating back to 1923 and a noteworthy roster of past winners including Andy Warhol, Sylvia Plath, Truman Capote, Richard Avedon, Robert Redford and Joyce Carol Oates.

The Awards are an important opportunity for students to be recognized for their creative talents.

To date, the Awards have encouraged over 13 million students, recognized more than 9 million young artists and writers, and made available more than $25 million in awards and scholarships. They continue to be the longest-running, most prestigious recognition program for creative teens in the U.S., and the largest source of scholarships for young artists and writers.

Students from The Ranch have participated in this awards program for a number of years. Each year several students have been chosen to compete at the National Level - and several have won top honors at that level.

Each teacher is allowed to submit a maximum of 10 pieces. This year, eight pieces were submitted from The Ranch representing the work of 3 students: Jasmine McMillen, Emily Reinhart and Alaric Sawade . We are proud to announce that each of the three students received at least one Gold Key Award (Alaric received 3 Gold Key Awards) - which means that their work will go on to compete nationally.

We hope you will want to see and support their work - and the work of other talented youth in the Pacific Northwest.

It will be exhibited at the Historic Monte Cristo, 1507 Wall Street, in downtown Everett. The dates for the exhibit are Monday, February 14 through Wednesday, February 23. Hours: Monday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Tuesday, 10 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.; Wednesday-Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Saturday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Monday-Tuesday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Wednesday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The opening night reception is on Tuesday, February 15, 2011, from 5-9 p.m. at the Historic Monte Cristo and the Awards Ceremony will be presented at the Civic Auditorium, 2415 Colby Avenue beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Innovative Prong Solutions for Setting Titanium

Free-formed rainbow Titanium can be very intriguing. It is bright, colorful, and sculptural. Against the bright shine of silver it certainly has the “bling” factor. One method for setting Titanium is by making your own hand built prongs. Our exploratory trip with instructor Holly Ginsberg Gage will highlight innovative handmade prong solutions; proper placement and structural consideration for the prongs; basic do’s and don'ts of prong making; as well as learning how to design with shrinkage in mind. Your finished piece will be of your own unique design inspired by your individual titanium or free-formed item of choice.

Negative Space Caning

Negative Space Caning is a high energy workshop focusing on creating filigree, chambers for enamel or polymer inlay, and patterns easily duplicated for tessellating designs by combining Metal Clay and a combustible material that disappears after firing in a kiln. This exciting new technique developed by Holly Gage is a springboard idea for looking at and working with Metal Clay in a whole new way.
The class will include a presentation and handouts on the basic cane making process, what combustible materials are suitable for the process, as well as simple and advance assembly techniques. You will also be introduced to how a complex cane is designed and created. Your finished piece will be of your own design ready for polishing and a patina at the workshop or inlaid on your own.

Tin containers are also made in many shapes and sizes, have great colors, images, patterns and text making them an ideal materials for creating handbags. I swear she had circus clowns in there. Usually when on thinks of handbags they think of the items that go inside, in this class we are going to do just the opposite. We are going to adorn the exterior of the purse with strange and wondrous things. We will be using the process of assemblage to transform an everyday handbag into a sculptural sight to behold. Webster's Tree:

Spring is “Auction Time” – and many of my students/families ask me to participate by donating to their school auctions. Often it's one of my own pieces, but I really enjoy donating something that involves all of the students – like Webster’s Tree.

Webster is 11, and has particularly enjoyed working with wire. He created a terrific, gnarly wire tree & considered hanging fused glass leaves from it (which would also have been lovely!) As it turns out, though – he is also interested in Polymer. So my part was teaching Webster & his Mom to make Polymer and wire leaves. They shared what they learned with his classmates – and everyone worked together to create this stunning tree.

Though the bidding stopped at $450.00; one of the bidders cornered Webster on the way out, and commissioned him to make a similar tree – for $400.00.

Congratulations, Webster – for contributing your gifts to help make the auction a success – AND for getting your first commission!!

Kid on a cell phone pulled out in front of me - there was no way to avoid him. He's fine. Shirley's fine. I'm not so fine. Seems I was the only one who saw it coming - and was braced for impact (not a good thing!)
I actually thought it wasn't so bad (cervical sprain and re-injury of my torn & herniated discs). So, as many of you know, I tried to carry on "business as usual" - and found I just couldn't. My Doctor says I have an unusually high pain threshold. Says it's like having duct tape over your "Check Engine" light - the problem is still there, but you may not notice until the engine blows.
And so I need to cancel classes until after Christmas. I'm so sorry. I hope you have a lovely Holiday (and Scholastic kids, somehow we'll get things done, I promise!!!)

"Bag Lady" Nite at The Ranch

THANK YOU to the terrific Moms from Trestle for another great “Bag Lady” Nite at The Ranch! This month we made lovely art jewelry earrings for women who are victims of Domestic Violence.

About 15 years ago, The Ranch was quietly known as: Wits End Ranch (Women In Transition - Envisioning New Destinies). DV Shelters sent women here for a few days at a time. To be hidden, pampered, nourished. To gain strength and resolve – while digging in the dirt, picking apples, getting a manicure, a re-cycled outfit - or just staring at the mountains. Because it is often at shelters that abused women learn that “The System” will not protect them – or their children. That knowledge makes them feel more vulnerable than they have ever been – and more likely to return to their abuser. Often because they know what they must endure – and are willing to do whatever it takes to protect their children.

Leaving, it turns out, is not as easy as it may seem.(Statistically, only a handful of cases ever make it to Court. Because Domestic Violence victims are afraid to follow through with charges. A man can be jailed for assaults for decades - yet the record shows no “history of Domestic Violence” – no “proof”.) And so, they sometimes came to Wits End.

Here, many of them learned what I was still learning: If I could have grasped how hard it would be, I may never have left. AND, if I could have even imagined that I could survive it, I would have left much sooner.

Next week, I will meet an amazing woman in an Everett parking lot – and give her 9 pair of earrings – 9 amulets of possibility, healing, strength - to give to the women she now shelters. For me, they are given in memory of 2 very special women. Survivors still, I hope:

One who had been the wife of an area Detective for more than 13 years, and arrived here with a bullet in her leg. Snohomish County is legend in this arena – and he knew the “right people”. She and her children already had 3 aliases by then – and had been running and hiding for 9 years. Can you imagine that? Your children can’t keep track of their own names. They can’t make friends. Have only furtive contact their own Grandparents. Can you really imagine that? Finally, there had been Federal Sting – but someone tipped him off, and he shot her. She bled all over the red and yellow quilt I’d bought for my abuser’s child.

The other, a quiet woman who rarely spoke. Who spent her days here on a chair overlooking the pond. The day before she left she said: “I can see colors again.”

Many of you know that we use Brain Gym (wish I could figure out how to get that trademark symbol in there where it belongs!)activities at The Ranch - especially when we work with younger kids, kids with learning "issues", seniors. (And often teens who are running amok!) Here's why: learning and making can be stressful. The brain depends on a fluid flow of neuro-transmission to function well. Stress interrupts that flow.

Brain Gym (picture the little TM) is a series of simple body movements that stimulate the brain to re-organize & de-stress. The results: better mental focus, better vision, better attitude -- a ready-to-learn state!

Explore two methods of adding real gold to your PMC designs in this action-packed workshop! In the morning, we'll discuss what designs are suitable for the addition of gold; then we'll design and complete a few sample projects so we can fire them during lunch. After lunch, we'll learn about Keum Boo (pronounced kum-boo) the ancient Korean Method of fusing actual gold (in the form of foil) to silver - and how it relates to PMC™. You'll discover that adding Keum Boo to your metal clay isn't nearly as complicated as people would have you think! And, you'll have a chance to apply Keum Boo to your sample designs. Then we'll explore the process of adding Aura 22 (real 22K gold) to our designs - including unique techniques that aren't typically a part of introductory Aura 22 instruction! Next we'll learn how to torch fire Aura 22 - and get a chance to apply what we've learned to our pieces.

Wire and Membrane Wearable Art

Learn how to bend and texture wire to build primitive organic armatures and then cover them with polymer clay membrane reminiscent of gut – “vegan gut!”. No experience necessary for this class - and even if you have played with wire and/or polymer clay before, this class will take you to new places as you learn to create w-a-y outside the lines.

SAM and the "Nothing But Nets Campaign" offers an insightful journey into the life of an African refugee. Nothing But Nets is a grassroots campaign to fight malaria, a leading killer of children in Africa.

You can participate in the Nothing But Nets/United Nations Foundation interactive display in Brotman Forum and join curator Pam McClusky and members of the African Arts Council for a public tour of the African Galleries at 1pm.

AND - Seattle Artist Marita Dingus invites kids and their parents to join in the Fabric Fences project the WaMu Open Studio from noon to 2pm.

The “Bag Lady” Project:

A while back, I worked a few years for our state’s Division of Developmental Disabilities, helping families to negotiate “the system” and to access resources for their children. During those years I worked with only 3 fathers. And I learned that, more than 87% of the time, it is mothers who end up (often alone, and living in poverty) caring for their disabled children. What they give/give up for years on end, what they learn – and what they teach – generally goes un-noticed and un-rewarded.

At The Ranch, we gather every few months to create a little something for women who – because of violence, poverty, mental or physical disabilities – get left “holding the bag”. We hope that what we create will honor them and bring them just a bit of joy. This month we made scarves with lovely glass slides – for women like:

K.J, a successful banker who adopted her niece when the mother was unable to care for her. No one suspected that this beautiful little girl would have a myriad of special needs. 17 years later, K.J. is physically and emotionally spent - unemployed, and in foreclosure.

M.K.- who probably fits several definitions of “Bag Lady”. She never had children of her own, but fell in love with a charming man who had a child with a disability - and spent several years being the “parent”. Although she finally brought herself to leave the father, she is still very invested in the child. And is willing to do most anything to stay involved.

W.K., who gave up a successful career for a life on welfare – because she knew that she couldn’t provide the therapies, advocate for her child’s rights and needs, and still work outside the home.

M.C., a beautiful mother of 2 – whose marriage, like many, could not withstand the stresses of having a child with a severe seizure disorder. Now, like many women who have spent years caring for others, she feels she is “too old” and has “too much baggage” to ever consider re-marrying.

And others. Women who learn to thread a tube through their infant’s nose, into their stomachs – knowing how easy it is for that tube to wind up in the lungs. But it's the only way to feed their baby. Women who work and raise a family during the day – and get up every 2 hours all night long – every single night - to care for their special needs child. For a year – or two - or ten.

Ask them: “How can you?” They will answer: “How can I not?”

Jewelry Artist and author, Ronna Sarvas Weltman is known for her inspired mixed media work! Ronna will introduce you to the unique properties and possibilities of polymer clay. You will learn a variety of polymer clay techniques including; beadmaking, custom color mixing, marbleizing, caning, and embellishing with a surprisingly large array of materials. Participants are encouraged to bring tools and materials for wirework, metalwork, beading, fiber, paper, painting and other mediums they currently work with - as you will explore combining, and completing your work with polymer clay. Ronna's classes are joyful and relaxed - expect to play hard, color outside the lines - and push your artistic limits! Prior experience with polymer clay is helpful, but not mandatory.

Congratulations to our Regional Winners!

While it's too early to post names - I do want to announce that 9 of our student entries (we are only allowed 10) will receive Silver or Gold Key awards at the 2009 Regional Scholastic Art & Writing Awards Competition this year! Four will go on to the National Competition in New York.

Scholastic has provided more than $75K in scholarships for students via this awards competition over the past 60 years - and we are happy to be able to provide our students with the opportunity to participate.

I hope you will want to join us for the Opening Night Reception on Tuesday, Feb 17th from 5 - 9 pm - at the Historic Monte Cristo, 1507 Wall street in downtown Everett.

All entrants' work will be exhibited at the Monte Cristo Feb 16 - Feb 23rd. This is an opportunity to view the some of the finest work being done by young artists, writers and film-makers in the Pacific Northwest. I hope you will want to come - and bring your children to see where art can take them!
